FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
CRISIS CAMP MIAMI FOR HAITI RELIEF
WHEN: Saturday, January 23rd, 12 noon
WHERE: Miami Herald, One Herald Plaza, Miami.
WHY: Developing and adapting social networking tools to aid in Haitian Rescue efforts.
CrisisCamp Miami will bring together domain experts, developers, and first responders around improving technology and practice for humanitarian crisis management and disaster relief.
Copy:
Social Media activists will be gathering on Saturday, January 23rd at noon to work on tweeking and developing social media tools like Twitter, Open Source Mapping and database integration to aid the Red Cross and other aid agencies now working in Haiti.
Building on efforts that began with the San Diego wildfires and Hurricane Katrina, volunteers are using new communications technology to aid in natural and human disasters.
Organizations like The Extraordinaries ( http://haiti.beextra.org/ ) and OpenStreetMap ( http://www.openstreetmap.org/ ) are examples of this process in action now.
CrisisCamp Miami particularly needs volunteers to help with the Port-au-Prince basemap and Creole speakers who can train others to use the technology.
